Shared or Dedicated IP?
Posted by admin in Web Hosting Library & FAQ on June 15th, 2009
Do you really know what is Dedicated IP?
Does it really important to have it for your site?
Is there any difference between having dedicated IP and shared IP?
Basically, when you are using a shared ip hosting plan, you are sharing your IP Address with other web sites: IP address is shared by hundreds of web sites.
So? What is the difference for you?
The difference is, web requests handled by Web Server. Server will load your site according to the request regarding the host header or virtual host name info. For example, if the web server has 100 website, then the Network Administrator has to configure virtual host or host header that should be unique to your site.
If the bandwidth of the web server is sufficent to support all those sites which sharing same IP, you won’t feel any difference. Your web site’s internet life will go on like having a dedicated IP.
When do i need dedicated ( static) IP? If you are planning e-commerce with SSL , it is necessary. Because, the handshake takes place before the host name is sent to the server. The server doesn’t know which encryption key to use when the connection is made.
Otherwise, no matter you have dedicated ip or not….
